SGA Senate Focuses on New Members and Annual Priorities

ELON, N.C. — The ��޹��Ʒ Student Government Association Senate met Thursday, Sept. 10 with an agenda focused on welcoming new members and beginning its work for the 2026-27 academic year.

The meeting agenda included the swearing-in of first-year and School of Engineering and Computing senators, a presentation of the Executive Council’s priorities and consideration of the Acorn Fund Manual and its annual timeline.

Dr. Naeemah Clark was also scheduled to present on mentoring and meaningful relationships.

SGA Senate Hears Plans for School of Engineering and Computing

ELON, N.C. — The ��޹��Ʒ Student Government Association Senate opened its fall schedule Thursday, Sept. 3 with a presentation from Dean Walz about the developing School of Engineering and Computing.

Walz discussed plans to grow the school to 400 students, develop collaborations across the university and expand connections with companies, alumni and other external partners. He also highlighted the new mechanical engineering degree, Elon’s computer science and cybersecurity offerings and the possibility of a future biotechnology major.

Vice President of Finance Cayce Becker reported that student organizations had requested $174,820.07 during the first quarter. SGA had approved $120,607.14, with $23,825.50 spent at the time of the meeting.

Senate leadership also reported that 36 students were running in the fall SGA election, including 33 first-year candidates.

SGA Senate Approves Greek Dance Funding and Governing Documents

ELON, N.C. — The ��޹��Ʒ Student Government Association Senate approved funding for Greek Dance, amended its constitution and adopted an updated Elections Manual during its Thursday, May 7 meeting.

The Greek Dance funding request passed 31-1 after senators amended the proposal to include required barricades and set marketing expenses at $100. The Senate also approved amendments to the SGA Constitution and the updated Elections Manual, both by votes of 34-0.

Madeline Dolan was appointed as a non-Senate member of the Finance Board, and Aarya Potti was appointed to represent the Class of 2027. Their appointments passed 33-0.

Vice President for Enrollment Greg Zaiser also presented an update on undergraduate enrollment, recruitment initiatives and the growth of Elon’s accelerated and graduate programs.

SGA Senate Approves Funding Requests and Global Photography Display

ELON, N.C. — The ��޹��Ʒ Student Government Association Senate approved two student organization funding requests and legislation establishing a student global photography display during its Thursday, April 30 meeting.

The Senate approved $6,654.72 for Catholic Campus Ministry’s Beach Retreat by a vote of 28-0 and $8,114 for an event hosted by Please Clap featuring improvisational comedian Terry Withers by a vote of 31-1.

Senators also passed S.B. 26-4.2 by a vote of 32-0. The legislation establishes a display in the Moseley Center featuring photography by Elon students participating in global programs. A slate of Senate committee chair appointments was approved 26-0.

SGA Senate Votes to Rename Mascot “Lumen”

ELON, N.C. The ��޹��Ʒ Student Government Association Senate voted 24 to 8 on Thursday, April 16 to rename the organization’s mascot Lumen, passing S.B. 26-4.1 during the Senate’s weekly meeting in Moseley 215.

Senator Maric authored the bill and said the name was chosen to represent the whole Elon community rather than lean toward either the beach or mountain sides of campus. Several senators raised questions about representation before the bill passed, and one amendment was proposed to tie the name more directly to Elon before the final vote.

“Hope you like the name Lumen. Go beaches,” Maric said after the vote.

The Senate also swore in several new senators this week. Capelle was appointed Engagement Senator, Goldstein will represent the Class of 2028, Iyer was appointed Sustainability Senator and Davis will represent the Class of 2027. Riley was appointed to the Finance Board and Jocelyn was appointed Assistant Comptroller, both passing 30 to 0. Chris Guider was elected Speaker Pro Tempore 31 to 0, and Murphy Davis was elected Parliamentarian by voice vote.

In her Vice President of Finance report, Cayce Becker said SGA has approved $303,207.37 in funding requests so far this year and encouraged student organizations to read the SGA bylaws closely before submitting new funding requests.

The Senate’s next public meeting is Thursday, April 30 at 7:30 p.m. in Moseley 215. Meetings are open to all Elon students.
