Dyslexia means your child’s brain processes language differently. Children with dyslexia often have strengths in creativity, problem-solving, and big-picture thinking. Roberts Academy is designed to help your child thrive.

Our instruction is grounded in structured literacy and the Orton-Gillingham method, which decades of research have shown to be the most effective approaches for teaching children with dyslexia to read.

Small classes. Specialist teachers. A curriculum built around how dyslexic brains actually learn. And the resources and accountability of a university behind every decision we make.

What is Structured Literacy?

Structured literacy teaches reading by explicitly building phonics, phonological awareness, and decoding in a clear, sequential order. It is the method most supported by reading science, and the one most recommended for children with dyslexia. It requires specialized training. Every Roberts Academy literacy teacher is trained in it.

A teacher listens attentively as students participate in a reading activity. Another teacher in the foreground holds an open picture book, while children sit nearby in a bright, engaging classroom.

What is Orton-Gillingham?

Orton-Gillingham (OG) is a multi-sensory reading method backed by decades of research, developed specifically for students with dyslexia. It teaches through sight, sound, and movement all at the same time, matching the way dyslexic learners process language. Every Roberts Academy literacy teacher is trained in Orton-Gillingham.

A proven model trusted by leading universities

The Roberts Academy program has been built and refined at partner campuses across the country. When children enroll at Elon, they are not part of an experiment. They are getting a program with a proven record at three highly respected universities.

From the Roberts Academy Network

You literally changed my kid鈥檚 life and gave her a real shot at success.

Chrissy Robinson,聽Roberts Academy Parent

Every family here knew their child was bright. They just needed a school that taught the way their child learns. They found Roberts Academy at Vanderbilt University, Mercer University, or Florida Southern College. Now Elon is bringing that same program here.

This is what they want other families to know.

Her confidence has blossomed! She now knows she isn鈥檛 dumb, she just learns differently.

Roberts Academy is a place where children with dyslexia thrive. They are given the resources they need, in the way they need them.

In just the first three months, our child transformed into a happier, more confident student.

He went from not reading full sentences to loving and wanting to read books.

The boost in confidence that my son has gotten has been life changing.

His confidence has soared and he takes pleasure in learning.

Who We Are

A family who believed it was possible. A dean who opened the door. A specialist who has spent her career on this.

Founding Donors

Hal and Marjorie Roberts have funded university-based academies for children with dyslexia at Vanderbilt University, Mercer University, Florida Southern College, and now 福利亚洲国产精品. This is not their first school. It is their fourth. Each one has produced children who returned to their home schools reading at or above grade level. In Hal’s words: 鈥淭his is an investment in changing the trajectory of children, schools, teachers, and communities.鈥 Their track record is the reason this model arrives at Elon with evidence, not just hope.

Dean, Dr. Jo Watts Williams School of Education

Dean Bullock has championed Roberts Academy from the beginning. She recognized that Elon had the faculty expertise, the community partnerships, and the institutional commitment to build a school specifically designed for children with dyslexia. When she says Elon stands behind this school, it means something: faculty research informing instruction, university accountability behind every decision, and future educators learning the same methods used to teach your child.

Dr. Alicia S. Tate

Acting Director

Dr. Tate is the person who will know your child by name. She has spent more than 30 years as a teacher, coach, and administrator dedicated to one thing: making sure children with learning differences get the instruction they deserve. A National Board Certified teacher and Ph.D. graduate of UNC Greensboro, she has championed literacy initiatives across North Carolina school systems. She does not run a program. She runs a school. And she is building it so that every child who walks through the door has a teacher who understands exactly how they learn.
