The nation’s oldest and most prestigious academic honor society installed its newest chapter Tuesday during ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ·’s Convocation for Honors, where faculty and staff members of Phi Beta Kappa were charged with upholding the society’s values by committing themselves to intellectual freedom, the pursuit of knowledge and the ideal of excellence in scholarship in the liberal arts and sciences.

¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· junior Molly Schriber has been named a recipient of a 2010 Udall Scholarship, an award dedicated in part for students pursuing careers related to the environment. It is the second time since 2008 that an Elon student has received the prestigious national award.

Catherine McNeela, professor of performing arts and coordinator of ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ·'s music theatre program, has been named the university's William S. Long Professor, an honor named for the institution's first president. McNeela's appointment was made by President Leo M. Lambert in recognition of her 20 years of outstanding teaching, scholarship and leadership in developing Elon’s nationally recognized Music Theatre program.

A 2009 ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· alumna will have a documentary she produced as a student broadcast this month on One Africa TV. Erin Barnett's film, "My Name is Anita," introduces viewers to Anita Isaacs, a former Periclean-in-Residence at Elon and an HIV/AIDS activist in Namibia.

Elon's School of Communications has been named the 2010 recipient of the national Equity and Diversity Award by the Association for Education in Journalism and Mass Communication (AEJMC).

The School of Communications on Wednesday announced the appointments of two associate deans, with associate professors Don Grady and Kenn Gaither assuming their new responsibilities on June 1. Associate professor Jessica Gisclair will succeed Grady as the school’s department chair.

Allen E. Gant Jr., chief executive officer of Burlington, N.C.-based Glen Raven, Inc., a global provider of innovative fabric-based solutions, was honored at a March 30 campus luncheon with the Frank S. Holt, Jr. Business Leadership Award, ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ·’s highest honor for business leadership.
