The National Society for Experiential Education has selected Associate Dean of Students Rex Waters as a co-recipient of its 2009 Higher Education Leader of the Year Award.

Commencement ceremonies were held on Aug. 22, 2009 for 45 M.Ed. students who completed their studies in the School of Education. Commencement speaker was David H. Cooper, Dean of the School of Education.

What does it take, and what responsibilities do students have, to act as "global citizens?" Professors Tom Arcaro and Rosemary Haskell tackle those questions in a new co-edited textbook and anthology, Understanding the Global Experience: Becoming a Responsible World Citizen, with chapters on topics ranging from the environment to religion to the international media.

Alan White, who had a 35-year career leading Elon athletics, and A. Hope Williams, president of the North Carolina Independent Colleges and Universities, received Elon Medallions at the Aug. 24 ceremonies marking the beginning of 2009 Planning Week.

Kathryn Mansfield Matera, associate professor of chemistry, has been selected as the third recipient of the A.L. Hook Emerging Scholar Professorship in Science and Mathematics at ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ·. The professorship provides funding and opportunities for faculty to mentor students and involve undergraduates in research and special projects.

Noel Lee Allen, a 1969 Elon alumnus whose distinguished legal career has won international accolades, received an honorary doctor of humane letters during ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ·’s Convocation for Honors on March 31. The degree was conferred by President Leo M. Lambert and presented by John G. Sullivan, professor emeritus of philosophy.

President Leo M. Lambert, Love School of Business Dean Mary Gowan, five business students and other friends of the university sounded the opening bell of the New York Stock Exchange on March 9 on a day when Wall Street celebrated Elon's academic achievements.

For the seventh year in a row, Elon is ranked among the nation's top colleges and universities by The Princeton Review. The 2010 college guide, released July 28, ranks schools based on a survey of 122,000 students from across the nation.
