Deep within the Petén Forest, which extends from the eastern Chiapas in Mexico through northern Guatemala and into northwestern Belize, are the ruins of the once powerful Maya. And though the pre-Columbian civilization collapsed centuries ago, the site of Dos Hombres, in Belize, still holds many secrets waiting to be unearthed by archaeologists, anthropologists and researchers, including Elon professor Rissa Trachman and her students.

Members of the Class of 2010 aren't the only people leaving Elon's campus this month. Several faculty and staff will be leaving Elon for the next chapter of their lives, too. A renowned scholar in the field of religious studies, a respected Elon colleague and an influential teacher of Elon students for more than two decades, Jeffrey Pugh, Maude Sharpe Powell Professor of Religious Studies, has been named the 2010 Distinguished University Scholar.

April Post, a 2001 Elon graduate, returned to North Carolina in 2004 and immediately made an impact in her classes, her church and for local Hispanic students and their families. In recognition of her efforts, Post, lecturer in Spanish, has received the 2010 Periclean Award.

To those who know Eric Hall, associate professor of exercise science, it should come as no surprise that he has been named the 2010 Ward Family Excellence in Mentoring Award recipient. He lives to mentor students. Literally.

All gifts received by May 31, 2010, count toward the Faculty/Staff Campaign as well as to Ever Elon: The Campaign for the Future of Our University, which seeks to build the university’s endowment, increase annual and planned giving, and build and preserve the campus. To date, donors to Ever Elon have contributed more than $77 million toward the $100 million comprehensive campaign goal.
