Hwayeon Ryu profiled in The Burlington Times-News for coronavirus research

The associate professor of mathematics was interviewed by The Burlington Times-News about her work on COVID-19.

Associate Professor of mathematics Hwayeon Ryu was recently profiled by The Burlington Times-News for her research to聽develop a mathematical model that could guide the development of new treatment options for COVID-19.

鈥淭here are a lot of open questions that haven’t been fully understood,鈥 Ryu told The Times-News. 鈥淢y role as a mathematician 鈥 in the intersection between mathematics and biology and other fields 鈥 is to keep collaborating and enhance our understanding of infectious diseases.鈥

In August, Ryu received a $12,100 National Science Foundation grant that will allow her to visit collaborators at聽the National Institute for Research in Digital Science and Technology聽(Inria Saclay)聽in France to work on their proposed project investigating the role of stochastic behaviors in immune dynamics to SARS-CoV-2. This July, she was also selected聽as an inaugural recipient of a fellowship by the聽Sylvia Bozeman and Rhonda Hughes EDGE Foundation聽that advances the research careers of women in the mathematical sciences.
