The Sierra Club named �������޹�����Ʒ one of the nation’s top “Coolest Schools” in the environmental group’s fourth annual rankings of America’s greenest campuses. It is the second consecutive year that Elon made the list, which rates schools in categories that include academics, waste management and energy efficiency.

“Text as the Basis for Text-less Music: 11th Century Poetry Meets a 21st Century Composer,” a symposium sponsored by �������޹�����Ʒ's Department of Music with contributions from the Department of English, takes place Sept. 13-15 to address the way in which instrumental music evokes, interprets and represents poetic texts, and the process by which composers craft “abstract” sounds from written sources.

Elon will begin upgrades to the Walter C. Latham Park baseball facility following the 2010 baseball season. The improvements are made possible by a group of generous donors led by trustee Dr. Bryan Latham and his wife, Janet, of Miami, who made a $250,000 commitment to fund the work.

Less than two years after President Barack Obama won office with a tidal wave of voter support for the Democratic Party, Republicans are on the verge of their own historic movement and will likely reclaim majority status in at least one chamber of Congress, according to a national political analyst who visited campus this week for a series of classroom and public events.

Career Services this week is introducing “Elon Employer Partners,” a new program to build more awareness of top companies seeking Elon job candidates. Featured partners include four Fortune 500 companies: EMC Corporation, Credit Suisse, Lowe’s Companies, and E. & J. Gallo Winery, as well as regional organizations such as Curtis Media Group, many of whom are participating in Elon’s upcoming Fall Career Kick-Off.

Conventional wisdom has it that a professional baseball player reaches his peak batting performance at age 27. Research by two �������޹�����Ʒ alumni, whose work in a general studies seminar last spring led to a presentation for the Society for American Baseball Research, shows otherwise, with what they hope is potential for changing the way Major League Baseball teams structure future contracts.

�������޹�����Ʒ associate professor Bird Stasz has received a Fulbright Senior Specialist Award and will travel to Tajikistan this fall to work with colleagues there in the Ministry of Education to help modernize the nation’s teacher education programs.

�������޹�����Ʒ President Leo M. Lambert joined with leaders from the North Carolina Railroad Company on Sept. 1, 2010, to formally dedicate a railroad underpass that safely connects both sides of campus for pedestrians.

The Downtown/East Burlington Biobus Express Route, an hour long loop from the Moseley Center that takes riders to several Alamance County community agencies within walking distance of its stops, returned to campus Tuesday afternoon for students who need weekday transportation for volunteer work in Burlington.

With stories of alumni who left �������޹�����Ʒ this spring to launch ambitious careers, and advice from administrators on engaging with the world as global citizens, New Student Convocation on Aug. 28 brought together freshmen who gathered as the Class of 2014 for the first time Under the Oaks of campus.
