Will China be the next world superpower, or will its political system implode as pressure builds from social inequalities that have appeared in recent years as economic advancements fuel its growth? NPR correspondent and China Road author Rob Gifford fears the latter, and in his Sept. 21 remarks as part of the 2010-11 Elon Common Reading Lecture, he shared with his audience why that’s the case.

NPR correspondent Rob Gifford, author of �������޹�����Ʒ's 2010-11 Common Reading selection China Road: A Journey into the Future of a Rising Power, will speak Tuesday night for the Common Reading Lecture. The book describes Gifford's 3,000-mile journey across Route 312 from Shanghai to China's western border with Kazakhstan.

Since coming to Elon in 1987, professor Eugene “Gene” Grimley has focused much of his energy on helping to build a strong chemistry program. He’s now turning his attention to an even bigger stage as the new president of Phi Lambda Upsilon, the national chemistry honor society with tens of thousands of active members across the United States.

Maurice Jennings ‘57, founder of Biscuitville restaurant and Burney Jennings ‘87, Biscuitville president, will be featured as the Love School of Business Legends of Business speakers on Wednesday, September 15, 4:30 pm. in the LaRose Digital Theatre. The event is open to all Elon students, faculty, and staff. A reception will follow.

The company that oversees all food and catering operations at �������޹�����Ʒ presented a $50,000 gift to school leaders Tuesday morning at College Coffee to fund a new community service program set to begin this year on campus.

The Sierra Club named �������޹�����Ʒ one of the nation’s top “Coolest Schools” in the environmental group’s fourth annual rankings of America’s greenest campuses. It is the second consecutive year that Elon made the list, which rates schools in categories that include academics, waste management and energy efficiency.

“Text as the Basis for Text-less Music: 11th Century Poetry Meets a 21st Century Composer,” a symposium sponsored by �������޹�����Ʒ's Department of Music with contributions from the Department of English, takes place Sept. 13-15 to address the way in which instrumental music evokes, interprets and represents poetic texts, and the process by which composers craft “abstract” sounds from written sources.

Elon will begin upgrades to the Walter C. Latham Park baseball facility following the 2010 baseball season. The improvements are made possible by a group of generous donors led by trustee Dr. Bryan Latham and his wife, Janet, of Miami, who made a $250,000 commitment to fund the work.

Less than two years after President Barack Obama won office with a tidal wave of voter support for the Democratic Party, Republicans are on the verge of their own historic movement and will likely reclaim majority status in at least one chamber of Congress, according to a national political analyst who visited campus this week for a series of classroom and public events.

Featured partners include four Fortune 500 companies: EMC Corporation, Credit Suisse, Lowe’s Companies, and E. & J.
