Additional retirees shared what they will miss about working at Elon and what they look forward to during retirement.

Patrick Murphy G鈥01

Assistant vice president for financial aid

Patrick Murphy joined Elon at the beginning of 1994 as bursar for Elon College to find a career that would, as he put it, add positivity to his day. Retiring at the end of the month, Murphy has served in a myriad of roles at Elon, including director of financial aid, senior associate dean and director of financial aid and assistant vice president for financial aid.

During the Faculty/Staff Awards Luncheon, Greg Zaiser, vice president for enrollment, credited Murphy with quietly and deliberately supporting Elon鈥檚 growth from a regional college to national and international distinction.

鈥淲hat I know now is because of Pat鈥檚 patience, accessibility and strong desire for success,鈥 added Zaiser.

After retirement, Murphy looks forward to spending more time with his wife and his five grandchildren, who are all under the age of six. He says his favorite memory at Elon was picking up astronaut and former senator John Glenn and his wife from the airport and guiding them across campus to multiple events.

鈥淚 will miss the people I work with,鈥 he said. 鈥淓lon has been the only place I worked where my friends are also people I work with.鈥


Beth McCain

Assistant teaching professor of accounting

Beth McCain joined Elon in 2016 teaching part-time as an adjunct after teaching at a community college. She was hired permanently in 2021 as a lecturer and also served as the director of the Master of Science accounting program. She retired on December 31, 2025.

While at Elon, McCain led January Term study abroad courses to Singapore, Thailand and Vietnam and was the inaugural faculty member for the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business study abroad program in Singapore.

At the Faculty/Staff Awards Luncheon, Catherine Chiang, professor of accounting and chair of the department of accounting, described McCain as one of the most dedicated and student-centered educators she had the privilege of knowing. 鈥淵our decade of service has shaped careers, strengthened our programs and raised the standards for what it means to be an Elon educator,鈥 said Chiang.

McCain returned the compliments to her department chair and gave a shoutout to Linda Poulson, who gave McCain 鈥渁 chance鈥 and also to her husband, who was in attendance.

Now retired, McCain is volunteering for Guilford County Animal Services in Greensboro and taking a French course at Elon in preparation for a three-month trip to France in the fall. Reflecting on her time at Elon, McCain said, 鈥淚 will greatly miss the amazing faculty and staff that I worked with as well as relationships that I developed with my students over the years.鈥


Linda Niedziela

Associate professor of biology and chair of the Department of Biology

Linda Niedziela

Linda Niedziela joined Elon in 2001 excited to teach courses in genetics and biotechnology. She was attracted to the university鈥檚 strengths in undergraduate education and undergraduate research. She will retire at the end of May after serving in a myriad of roles, including biology department chair, assistant professor, associate professor, director of the science branch of Elon College Fellows and the Japheth E. Rawls chair for undergraduate research in science.

Niedziela said she will miss what she calls the 鈥渄aily therapy sessions.鈥 She shared that every day during the semester, whoever is able will meet for lunch on the first floor of McMichael and discuss wide-ranging topics, including teaching tips, research reports, personal stories about families and pets and anything else that is on the mind of lunch attendees.

She said, 鈥淚 will miss the wonderful faculty and staff colleagues in the biology department who have become like family to me.鈥

After retirement, Niedziela and her husband, Carl, an adjunct assistant professor of biology at Elon, who will also be retiring, will travel with their dogs in an airstream travel trailer and spend time in their woodworking shop. She will also be devoting more time training and competing with her Shetland sheepdog in performance dog sports.


Anthony Hatcher

Professor of journalism and chair of the Journalism Department

Anthony Ha

Anthony Hatcher joined Elon in 2002 and has served as associate professor of journalism, full professor of journalism and the inaugural chair of the Department of Journalism.

Hatcher said he did not have a passport until he joined Elon in his early 40鈥檚. 鈥淪ince 2004, I have taken students to Hong Kong, South Africa and multiple European countries,鈥 he reflected. Hatcher also created a religion and media course in his first year, which he taught every year since.

One of those colleagues, Harlen Makemson, professor of communication design, praised Hatcher at the Faculty/Staff Luncheon for Hatcher鈥檚 empathy and humanity during what he described as a time of upheaval in the media world, brought on by new technologies. 鈥淎nd while it’s true that Anthony Hatcher serves on virtually every major standing committee at Elon, it’s his humanity, his warmth and his care, that is his most impactful service to his university.鈥

鈥淚 will miss being with students, and I will miss seeing my colleagues 鈥撀爉y friends 鈥撀燿aily or weekly,鈥 said Hatcher. During the ceremony, he added, 鈥淚 hope in addition to teaching all those wonderful students I鈥檝e had over the past nearly quarter century, I hope in some small way, I made their lives a little better because God knows they helped me be better.

After retirement, Hatcher looks forward to biking, hiking, travel and spending time with his granddaughter. 鈥淲riting will be part of retirement as well, since I can鈥檛 sing or paint,鈥 he added.


Robert Moorman

Robert Moorman joined Elon as the Frank Holt Jr professor of business leadership in 2011, a title he held throughout his time at Elon. Retiring in May, Moorman has also served as the department chair for the Department of Management, Entrepreneurship and International Business.

During the Faculty, Staff Awards Luncheon, Haya Ajjan, dean of the Martha and Spencer Love School of Business and professor of management information systems, shared that Moorman has a gift few others do 鈥撀爐he ability to ask the types of questions that 鈥渕ake you stop walking, look around at where you actually are and suddenly see it鈥 question that stays with you for the rest of your life.鈥 Ajjan offered Moorman a golf club afterwards in the spirit of his retirement.

During the ceremony, Moorman shared that education is so much more than reading books and looking at stats. 鈥淚t鈥檚 really about the relationships we have,鈥 he said. 鈥淚t’s the relationships with our students and the utter joy of seeing people cycle through during this really important time of their lives, you know, touching you and stepping in and stepping out and then seeing them grow as they go.鈥

Moorman said his favorite memories are those involving friendships with colleagues and partnerships with students. 鈥淚 have fond memories of a few colleagues congregating in my office talking about the joys and frustrations of the day,鈥 he said.聽 鈥淚 also have fond memories of holding classes that just seemed to 鈥榳ork鈥 that day and then talking with students afterward about how they continued thinking about our discussions.鈥

After retiring at the end of this month, Moorman looks forward to what he calls unstructured adventure. 鈥淚 am looking forward to a time of boredom that then grows into something new, unplanned and adventurous. What fun!鈥


Charity Johansson

Professor of physical therapy education and chair of the Doctor of Physical Therapy Department.

In 1999, Charity Johnsson joined what would become the Doctor of Physical Therapy program as one of its first faculty. She retired in December 2025 after decades of service in which she held positions of associate professor, full professor, faculty administrative fellow, interim associate department chair, interim department chair and program director, department chair and program director and university parliamentarian.

Johansson said she is already missing the 鈥渄aily exchanges with colleagues whose brilliant minds and genuinely kind hearts鈥 have shaped her over nearly three decades. Likewise, she will miss the students, and their 鈥渋nfectious enthusiasm, their compassion and the joy of watching them transform in ways they hadn鈥檛 even imagined possible.鈥

During the Faculty/Staff Awards Luncheon, Crystal Ramsey praised Johansson as a 鈥渃ornerstone of the Elon academic community, whose legacy is defined not just by the position she has held, but by the enduring way she has nurtured the hearts, minds and professional identities of future healthcare providers.鈥 Ramsey is an associate professor of physical therapy education and a former student of Johansson鈥檚.

At the ceremony, Johansson reflected on the retirement of Gerry Francis, who served as professor emeritus of mathematics and provost emeritus.

鈥淕erry Francis told me he doesn鈥檛 miss the work, but he really misses the people 鈥 and I get that,” she said.

She also said it was a privilege working with so many in the Elon community who have encouraged her, challenged her and made her laugh to help her be a better a human. 鈥Fred Rubeck, you鈥檙e among those,鈥 Johansson added, honoring the late professor of performing arts and chair of the Department of Performing Arts.

Now retired, Johansson said she is enjoying time outdoors with family and close friends, planning travel and trying new ventures, including fiction writing.


Marcia Dodson

Marcia Dodson

Marcia Dodson joined Elon in 2015 and is the proud mother of three sons who graduated from Elon. She will be retiring at the end of May and has served as a service desk analyst for facilities management, program assistant in the Danieley Neighborhood and Station at Mill Point.

A favorite memory of Dodson鈥檚 while at Elon is joining the London Experience for staff, where she built relationships with colleagues she had not yet had the opportunity to meet while working at Elon. 鈥淲hat an awesome experience!鈥 she reflected.

After retirement, Dodson looks forward to being a traveling grandparent with her husband.


Rosemary Haskell

Professor of English

Rosemary Haskell

Rosemary Haskell joined Elon in 1985 and will be retiring in August. She has held the roles of temporary instructor and assistant, associate and later, full professor of English.

Haskell said she will most miss her kind and interesting colleagues, as well as the 鈥渆nergizing power of the new class of bright-eyed and bushy-tailed first-years each August.鈥

One of Haskell鈥檚 favorite memories at Elon is during the transition of the Fighting Christians to the Phoenix. She enjoyed the papier-mache birds and eggs in trees around campus that offered a clue to the new mascot.

After retirement, Haskell said she plans to spend time with her family and do some home improvement work.


Cheryl Riley

Cheryl Riley

Cheryl Riley joined Elon in 2013 as a custodian and will retire at the end of May. 鈥淚 will miss the people I work with,鈥 she said. 鈥淎nd I look forward to spending time with my grandkids.鈥


Linda Dunn

Adjunct assistant professor of Peace and Conflict Studies

Linda Dunn joined Elon in 1998 as the director of the Alamance County Dispute Settlement Center, where she trained a group of students and returned to train several faculty members in mediation skills, who later became volunteer mediators for the center. Dunn鈥檚 official start date on record is 2001, when she taught a two-credit mediation and conflict resolution skills course as part of a new minor called Nonviolent Studies. She retired at the end of December, 2025.

Federico Pous spoke on behalf of Dunn during the Faculty/Staff Awards luncheon, praising Dunn鈥檚 ability to teach hands-on peaceful conflict resolution skills and strategies across different social backgrounds.

鈥淟inda’s way of teaching and interacting with students, staff and professors, makes you feel that you are equal to her in the same community space,鈥 he shared.

鈥淚 will miss the students and their passion the things I teach,鈥 said Dunn. Two of her students attended the luncheon.

After retirement, she plans to attend cultural events on campus and potentially assist in future facilitated discussions on campus. She will also continue to volunteer as a mediator at the Alamance County District court, continue restorative circle skills and mediation and training skills with Restorative Justice Durham and the Orange County District County District court.

鈥淚 will continue to be an activist for restorative justice and peacemaking organizations as we navigate the chaos and violence in our world,鈥 she added.


Elizabeth Bailey

Elizabeth Bailey began her career at Elon in 2004 and, enjoying the vibe of the community, wanted to be 鈥減art of it all.鈥 She started as a lecturer for the required wellness course, lectured for the School of Education before joining Exercise Science.

Retiring at the end of Spring semester, Bailey said she will most miss her colleagues and all the 鈥渇riends among the faculty and staff鈥 she has made while at Elon.

鈥淚 will also miss the opportunities to continue to learn that are available at Elon, whether it be through taking classes or participating in workshops or going abroad,鈥 she added. She said, while at Elon, he has learned a lot.

Bailey said her retirement plans continue to evolve, and she still intends to exercise classes and do some research on the side.


Kim Giles, 鈥11 G鈥16

Kim Giles

Since her first role in 1995, Kim Giles has served in various roles at the university, including data entry in admissions and accounting, budget clerk in the physical plant, program assistant for Biology, Chemistry, Environmental Studies, Engineering, Chemistry, and Physics, and assistant director of communications in the Student Professional Development Center.

Giles retired during the summer of 2025. She said she cherishes the opportunity to earn an MBA at Elon along with her daughter. She said about the experience, 鈥渨hat an unforgettable experience that was in crossing the stage along with my daughter to get our MBA鈥檚 together 鈥撀爄t was quite surreal.鈥

Giles also reflected on traveling with peers and faculty to Vietnam and Singapore, the many evolutions of Staff Appreciation Day, and being honored as the staff member of the year 鈥撀燼n experience she said she will cherish forever.

Since retiring, Giles has taken nine cruises and has done kayaking, camping and gardening. She looks forward to continuing to spend time with family.


Sharon Moss LaRocco

Sharon Moss LaRocco was recognized at the Faculty/Staff Awards Luncheon by Hallie Hogan, associate professor of music. LaRocco joined the Elon Music Department in 1988 as a pianist for musical theater productions, music ensembles and student recitals.

Hogan shared, 鈥淎lthough she kept a very low profile, there was never any doubt about this, because she never missed a beat, much less a note, and maintained high quality for every performance she gave,” Hogan said.

She shared that students developed a strong admiration for LaRocco鈥檚 talent and a deep love for her kind and understanding nature.

Beyond Elon, Sharon has devoted herself to advocating for people with autism, through her work as a leader in the Office of Society of North Carolina, notably promoting autism awareness for the Native American communities of Western North Carolina.

At the awards ceremony, LaRocco shared that one of her favorite memories was the construction of Rhodes Stadium, which signaled to her the emergence of a marching band.

鈥淲ho doesn鈥檛 love a marching band?鈥 asked LaRocco to the audience. 鈥淎nd the spirit and the energy it creates walking through the campus, en route to the games.鈥


Jana Lynn Patterson

During the Faculty/Staff Awards Luncheon, Jon Dooley, vice president for Student Life and associate professor of education, described Patterson as someone who is consistent in how she shows up for others, patient when a young leader makes a mistake, honest with students and colleagues even when it is hard and someone who not only believes in others, and one who helps others believe in themselves.

鈥淪he supported students in college through tragedy, advised student organizations, and celebrated their success,鈥 said Dooley. 鈥淪he has created spaces of welcome and belonging, and met the students in their darkest hours, helping them piece together on plans to move forward.鈥

Patterson was also recognized for her 40 years of service and held back tears while addressing the audience. A first-generation student from Hope Mills, North Carolina, Patterson said her parents could have never dreamed where she is today.

鈥淭o my staff and colleagues, you are the A-Team,鈥 she shared. “But to everyone in this community, I want you to know that every day has been an honor and a pleasure to be a part of this community and to have worked with you.鈥

Federico Pous, associate professor of Spanish, introduced students to Teatro Foro, or 鈥渇orum theater,鈥 an interactive theater technique developed by Augusto Boal to portray social and political conflict.

In Teatro Foro, actors perform a short scene centered on a conflict that remains unresolved at the end of the performance, inviting audience members to intervene and propose solutions. Throughout the semester, students examined how significant events in Latin American history have been represented and understood by the public.

During the May 7 showcase, two student groups performed original scenes depicting conflicts that could occur in everyday college life.

The first performance, 鈥淐aos en el apartamento鈥 (鈥淐haos in the Apartment鈥), focused on tensions among roommates caused by messy living habits, poor communication and the frequent presence of one roommate鈥檚 boyfriend 鈥 all compounded by the inaction of an inattentive resident assistant.

Audience members stepped into the performance to suggest compromises and alternative approaches to resolving the conflict. While the scenario centered on a relatively ordinary disagreement, the performance highlighted how power dynamics, silence and passivity can shape even the most personal spaces.

The second performance addressed more serious themes, including sexism, domestic violence and bystander intervention.

Associate Professor of Spanish Frederico Pous leads a discussion as “The Joker” of this Teatro Foro to reflect on the impact of the performances

鈥淟a lecci贸n que no escucharon鈥 (鈥淭he Lesson They Didn鈥檛 Hear鈥) followed a college student trying to convince her friends to believe her account of domestic violence and warn another friend about the perpetrator before it was too late. The performance challenged audience members to consider why survivors are sometimes dismissed or ignored.

Student spectators again entered the scene to propose solutions and interventions, working through the complexities of responding to gender-based violence and supporting survivors.

Following the performances, Pous led a discussion encouraging students to reflect on the themes raised in each scene, including silence in the face of oppression and the responsibility to speak out against injustice.

The performances prompted broader questions from both actors and audience members, including how individuals can respond to injustice and how communities can work to prevent gender-based violence. Through the forum theater exercise, students explored practical responses to social conflict while encouraging critical reflection among everyone involved.

Federico Pous delivers a talk about 50 years of the dictatorship in Buenos Aires Argentina /u/news/2026/04/14/federico-pous-delivers-a-talk-about-50-years-of-the-dictatorship-in-buenos-aires-argentina/ Tue, 14 Apr 2026 18:32:06 +0000 /u/news/?p=1044132 On Friday, March 27, Associate Professor of Spanish Federico Pous addressed graduate students and professors from the College of Social Sciences at the University of Buenos Aires.聽He inaugurated the Master in Latin American Social Sciences, and gave another talk at the University of El Salvador, both located in downtown Buenos Aires.

Pous’s talk was part of a much larger week of events that included other research presentations, cultural events, and public talks, with an epicenter in a huge street demonstration that took place on March 24 throughout the country. The massive mobilization commemorates the day on which the dictatorship started in 1976, and brought together political activists and groups, as well as cultural spectacles and common citizens, to remember the dark years of the dictatorship, so as not to repeat them again. Under the cry of Nunca Mas! (Never again), the people maintain a culture of memory despite the attempt of the current government to dismantle the human rights platform that makes it possible.

In the context of the Cold War, Argentina, like most Latin American countries during the 60s, 70s and 80s, went through a period of military dictatorships that targeted political opponents with the financial and political support from the U.S. From 1976 to 1983, Argentina was under a military dictatorship that utilized irregular methods of repression against its own population. Following the lesson learned at the School of the Americas, the military regime created a system of clandestine centers of detention in which political opponents were brought after being kidnapped in the streets, their workplaces or in their homes. Once in these clandestine prisons, they were tortured, treated with minimum care, uncommunicated from their family members, and most of them were killed and their bodies disappeared. It is calculated that 30,000 people disappeared under this system of repression.

Since the return of democracy in 1983, there has been a grassroots collective effort to recompose the social link by fomenting a culture of memory in the country under the banner of Not forget, not forgive (Ni Olvido ni Perd贸n). Throughout the years, different human rights organizations worked along with state officials, international support groups, and local community organizations to persecute the criminal legally (over 1000 were already condemned), build and maintain several sites of memory, and provide retribution to the people affected directly and indirectly by it.

Pous’s talk emphasized this collective effort to cultivate a culture of memory across different generations. For Pous, 鈥渢he task of memory today is an intergenerational endeavor that requires to be open ot listen to the questions and concerns of the new generations.” In his talk, he focused on key cultural products like the films “The Official History” (1985) and “Argentina 1985” (2022) as well as the fiction books “La casa de los conejos” (2006) and “Diario de una princesita Montonera” (2012) to highlight the public debates around postdictatorship democracy that have fed the culture of memory in the country.

Earlier in the week, Pous presented his book, Eventos Carcelarios (UNC Press, 2022), at the University of El Salvador for an audience of professors and graduate students. He delivered a talk about the novel “El beso de la mujer ara帽a” (Puig 1976) in conjunction with a historical analysis of the liberation of political prisoners in 1973, at the return of a seven-year dictatorship that preluded the most horrific one mentioned above. His talk focused on the 鈥渃onnection between an historical event that was lived as if it was the revolution, but it turned out to be the beginning of the defeat of the revolutionary project鈥. For Pous, the prison cell became 鈥渁 singular place of reflection and self-critique鈥 that the novel depicts in detail to reimagine the possibility of a radical imagination today.

Peace and Conflict Studies provides mediation training at Elon /u/news/2025/10/28/peace-and-conflict-studies-provides-mediation-training-at-elon/ Tue, 28 Oct 2025 18:39:51 +0000 /u/news/?p=1031892 On Oct. 25, Elon students, faculty, staff and community members particpated in a two-day mediation training conducted by Linda Dunn, a certified mediator who has been part of Elon for almost 30 years.

Mediation is a peacemaking process that empowers disputants to solve their interpersonal conflicts. It is used largely in the US court system and in different organizations to de-escalate and resolve minor issues among employers/employees, students, neighbors, friends, and family members. For me, going through the training was an intensive learning experience that fundamentally relied on one fundamental human task: listening to the other.

Funded by an Elon Innovates Grant and promoted by the Peace and Conflict Studies Program, the training teaches mediation as a peaceful conflict resolution method. Dunn, three students, four professors, one staff and two community members constituted a very diverse, cohesive and energetic group that met for two full days and were introduced into the world of mediation and restorative justice. During the training, people were able to learn the mediation method by practicing it several times from different perspectives. After finishing, they can participate in real mediation cases (supervised by certified mediators) and eventually obtain the certification. At Elon, students can choose to go to mediation to resolve their own conflicts though this method.

鈥淢editation should be included in professional trainings when we enter a new working place because it fosters the consideration of other views, behaviors, actions, and reactions that affect not only the working environment, but also our own lives,” said Associate Professor of Spanish Mayte De Lama, who participated in the training.

The different racial and ethnic backgrounds, as well as the origins and trajectories of the people in the room enriched the group dynamic in which each of the participants played a role, whether as a disputant or as a mediator, incarnating the six stages of mediation.

Mediation is a process that includes: the introduction of mediators and disputants as well as the reading of ground rules for the conversation; the description of the conflict made by each of the discussant, carefully written by the mediators; the identification of the main concerns that still bother the people involved; a brainstorming process of potential solutions; the election of common solutions; and the writing of an agreement that states the steps to follow to recompose the situation. Although it looks simple at first, walking with other mediators in training through this process requires refined mediation skills to help others navigate their conflicts.

Clarifying the role of the mediator, Linda established from the beginning that they 鈥渄o not judge, do not take sides, and do not give advice.聽Mediators help people to take responsibility for their actions and lead them through a collaborative brainstorming process that usually results in win/win solutions to both parties.鈥

According to Dunn, it is crucial to trust the people involved in the conflict to find their own way of resolving it, and when is possible and needed, repairing the damage produced.

During the training, participants practiced different mediation cases followed by intense conversations and reflections, which also sprang moments of laughter and community building.

鈥淚 left having found a new community of amazing individuals, a new kind of understanding and connection to myself and others on a much deeper level than I ever anticipated, while learning to meditate. It was worth every second and I’m so grateful to have been a part of it,” said Gracie Bleiberg ’28.

The training was part of the Campus Mediation Program (CMP), which has run this training once a year over the last three years. CMP also offers mediation conflict resolution opportunities among students at Elon, where already trained students (supervised by Dunn) mediate among other students who have had an interpersonal conflict. Over 15 cases have been resolved successfully with this method.

Usually, students are trained in the course, “PCS1210 Intro to Conflict Mediation,” which prepares them to mediate cases at Elon. For instance, Michael Romano ’26, who took the class, helped facilitate the training.

鈥淲orking with Linda and learning about conflict mediation has allowed me to dramatically improve my conflict resolution skills while providing me the opportunity to help those in our community while doing so,” said Romano.

As other students have done in the past, Romano will be going to mediate cases in the Alamance County Court (overseen by Dunn) to achieve certification.

CMP has partnered with other organizations on campus to promote restorative justice practices at Elon. The fundamental goal of this program is to contribute to the creation of an ongoing culture of dialogue about conflict resolution on campus, not only to bring light to mediation as a possible path towards conflict resolution, but also as an ongoing effort to address difficult conversations at Elon.

鈥淚t gives me hope to spend time with other people who are also trying to find ways to help humans communicate better,” said Elizabeth Hambouger, a specialist in restorative justice from Durham who participated in the training.

She presented the work of the Diocesan Commission for the Defense of Nature (CODIDENA), an organization that advocates for the restoration of the identity and spirituality of the Xinka Indigenous people of Central America while protecting nature against extractivist mega-projects. Lemus talked in detail about the case of the peaceful resistance to the Escobal mining project, and their everyday struggles against the government and the mining corporations.

During the talk, she shared the values of her community to protect the earth and how they recognize themselves as Xinka by recovering their language and their culture. She also expressed the difficult reality faced by her community in rural areas as well as the challenges faced by organizers advocating for the Xinka land rights. The talk explored how they were able to stop the development of the mining project after three years of struggle, based on the Indigenous and Tribal People Convention, an international agreement acknowledged by the International Labour Organization, in which indigenous people must be consulted in case of any project affecting their population. In this case, after consulting with the Xinka people, they decided to reject the mining project given the multiple threats to their health and the environment.

Lemus also showed her grassroots initiative with young scientists in the Xinka community to address water contamination issues provoked by mining operations. This project not only capacitates the new generations, but also advocates for an intergenerational collective growth of the whole Xinka people. As a result of this initiative, community members created a system for measuring the degree of contamination in the water, empowering communities to defend themselves in their fight for environmental justice.

Over 50people attended the event. Students from peace and conflict studies, Latin American studies, as well as from different Spanish courses, the Core Curriculum, and philosophy classes learned about the complexity of current environmental struggles in Guatemala. After the talk, students asked several questions regarding the role of the Guatemalan government in this conflict and the recognition of the Xinka identity, engaging in a very fruitful dialogue about the importance of advocating for indigenous rights and environmental justice in peaceful demonstrations. The conference was conducted in Spanish with interpretation performed by Emily Rhyne from the organization Witness for Peace.

Lemus also participated in a roundtable discussion in Spanish with other human rights activists at El Centro. The roundtable focused on Guatemalan history and cultural diversity, generating a constructive dialogue among students learning about Latin American indigenous identities. The speakers talked about the work of their organizations at the local, national and global level, emphasizing the need to construct strong networks of solidarity. Students from the Spanish program engaged in a vivid conversation during the event, learning about the intercultural richness of Central America and the political relevance of the region in relation with the U.S. government today.

On Sept. 24-25, 2025, Chen-L贸pez’s two-day visit invited students to reflect on their understanding of Latin American identity and migration as he shared his innovative research on the representation of Chinese communities in Latin American literature, cinema, and visual arts, which is a topic that opened new perspectives for students and community members across multiple disciplines.

Chen-L贸pez’s keynote address, “Affective Mapping: Tracing the Chinese Diaspora in Latin American Literature, Cinema, and Visual Arts,” examined how Chinese identity and history are portrayed in creative works throughout different Latin American countries: Mexico, Costa Rica, and Argentina. His work traces how emotional responses to Chinatowns and Chinese neighborhoods have evolved over time and explores how the very concepts of “China” and “Chineseness” have shifted in response to changing geopolitical dynamics.

The visit extended far beyond a single lecture. Chen-L贸pez engaged directly with students in various courses in the classrooms and in El Centro, including “Human Migrations”, “Medical Spanish”, “Growing Up in the Spanish Speaking World”, “In Search of Identity, Innovation and Social Protest Theater”, and COR1100. He also met with student members from the Latin American Studies program, the Spanish Club, and the Chinese Club during a community breakfast, fostering cross-cultural dialogue.

For many students, the presentations sparked revelations about migration patterns they had never considered. Anette Cruz 鈥28, reflected on how the experience transformed their perspective

“Previously when thinking about migration to Latin American countries it never really came to my head to think about countries like China,” said Cruz. “When I would think about migration, I聽would think it was mostly within Latin American regions. But after learning about the impact Chinese migration has had on countries like Mexico, Costa Rica, and Argentina, it really made me think about the significance of it. I was able to see that through symbolism shown to me in Mexican readings, Argentinian movies and Costa Rican paintings, and to me I found that very interesting because again, I feel as if I would have overlooked that if I was presented with it. Overall Chinese diaspora in Latin American countries shown through historical contexts and symbolism in art is something new that I learned today, something that has opened my eyes a little more when talking about migration to Latin American countries.鈥

Chen-L贸pez’s interdisciplinary approach demonstrated how overlooked communities have shaped Latin American culture in profound ways. By examining representations of “China” and “Chineseness” in Latin American art, literature, and film, he sparked a dialogue among students and the broader 福利亚洲国产精品 community on the importance of interdisciplinary research and looking beyond dominant narratives to discover the multiple histories of a society.

Baris Kesgin, associate professor of political science and public policy, and Elon alum Katherine Graham McCormick 鈥24 published an article in “, one of the publications of the American Political Science Association.

This work is an important contribution to the at-a-distance study of political leaders and gender studies, and in fact illustrates a rare connection between the two. The authors present systematically developed profiles of multiple contemporary American women political leaders and an average profile (in contrast to the many existing ones that are predominantly male). Kesgin and McCormick project that the dataset will be used, invite conversations and receive critique, be updated by others, and this manuscript will inspire other similar undertakings.

According to the authors, although women leaders assume prominent national offices in the United States (and the world), one of the well-established specializations in political science and psychology (i.e., leadership studies) is inundated with male-centric benchmarks. Their article suggests a remedy and introduces a women leaders comparison group for operational code analysis, which is a quantitative approach measuring leaders鈥 beliefs about politics. The manuscript and its associated dataset give scholars in the field a more appropriate quantitative benchmark for effectively comparing specific female leaders to a larger female norming group.

Kesgin and McCormick gathered American women leaders鈥 speeches from the Iowa State University Archives of Women鈥檚 Political Communication. Using an automated content analysis, they developed a comparison group exclusively for American female politicians in national politics. The authors’ findings indicate noticeable differences and suggest similarities with the existing male-dominant comparison groups; notwithstanding, they note that they aspire to initiate a conversation and hope that more data will follow and shed more light on women leaders. Kesgin and McCormick hope that their manuscript and the dataset will provide an illustrative example to bridge leadership and gender studies in advancing the study of women leaders in the United States and beyond.

Kesgin published multiple manuscripts on political leaders of India, Israel, Turkey, and small Pacific Island states. McCormick graduated from 福利亚洲国产精品 with a degree in political science and public policy, with minors in peace and conflict studies and public health. Currently, she is a doctoral student at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.

McKibben was awarded the Right Livelihood Award in 2014, sometimes called the 鈥渁lternative Nobel鈥 and received the Gandhi Peace Award in 2013. His book 鈥淭he End of Nature鈥 is regarded as the first book for a general audience about climate change and has been translated into 24 languages. TIME Magazine called McKibben 鈥減erhaps the planet鈥檚 best green journalist,鈥 and he has lectured and organized on every continent, including Antarctica. He helped found 350.org, the first global grassroots climate campaign, and has recently helped found Third Act, to build a progressive organizing movement for people over age 60. McKibben, the author of fifteen books, is the Schumann Distinguished Scholar in Environmental Studies at Middlebury College and a fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.
