“Text as the Basis for Text-less Music: 11th Century Poetry Meets a 21st Century Composer,” a symposium sponsored by �������޹�����Ʒ's Department of Music with contributions from the Department of English, takes place Sept. 13-15 to address the way in which instrumental music evokes, interprets and represents poetic texts, and the process by which composers craft “abstract” sounds from written sources.

Omri Shimron, assistant professor of music, has been invited to perform a new ensemble work in a faculty-artist recital at the Arizona State University School of Music on Sunday, Sept. 12.

Thomas Erdmann, a professor of music, has been selected to serve on the editorial board of the professional journal Women Of Note Quarterly.

Associate professor Stephen A. Futrell, Elon's director of Choral Activities, made his sixth appearance as guest featured vocalist with the Eastern Kentucky University Orchestra at its annual “Pops in the Park” concert on Aug. 21, 2010.

Thomas Erdmann, professor of music, had three 6,000-word articles featured on the cover of the September/October 2010 issue of Saxophone Journal.

Omri Shimron, assistant professor of music, will be the featured pianist in a new work by composer David Lipten. It will be released commercially on the Ablaze label later this fall.

The �������޹�����Ʒ Jazz Ensemble, under the direction of associate professor Jon Metzger, completed this month a performance tour of The Netherlands, Germany and Denmark. The 18-piece jazz ensemble played at international festivals and schools, gave jazz improvisation workshops, and showed their versatility by also performing two classical music chamber concerts.

Associate professor Stephen A. Futrell, director of choral activities at �������޹�����Ʒ, presented at the Arizona chapter of the American Choral Directors Association State Conference (Four Corners Choral Workshop) held June 17-19 in Flagstaff, Ariz., at Northern Arizona University.
