Sixty children taking part in a university program that helps struggling readers will spend the next two weeks on campus with activities aimed at strengthening their writing and creative expression.

A literacy program created by Associate Professor Jean Rattigan-Rohr received $2,500 to help purchase new books for young children tutored by ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· education majors.

The National Association for Music Education recognized its ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· members for their contributions to the "It Takes a Village" Project reading program.

Students, educators and “It Takes a Village” Project stakeholders from three universities meet to discuss ways to improve literacy for struggling readers.

A childhood literacy initiative at ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· will add a summer reading camp to its list of programs for boys and girls in the local community who encounter trouble learning to read.

The associate professor of education received the 2013 Periclean Award for Civic Engagement and Social Responsibility for her work to improve the literacy skills of children struggling with reading.

Local children who receive help learning to read from ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· students were part of a Sunday musical performance in Whitley Auditorium.
