Denim Day – April 27 /u/news/2016/04/20/denim-day-april-27/ Wed, 20 Apr 2016 16:05:00 +0000 /u/news/2016/04/20/denim-day-april-27/ The Department of Health Promotion is leading this effort and will be providing buttons to anyone wishing to observe Denim Day.  Employees who wish to participate by wearing denim should seek their supervisor’s approval.

For the past 17 years, has led international observances of Denim Day on a Wednesday in April in recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Month. The campaign was originally sparked by a 1999 Italian Supreme Court ruling, in which a rape conviction was overturned.  The justification for the reversal suggested that a woman wearing tight jeans could not be raped, since they would be impossible to remove without the victim’s assistance. The following day, the women in the Italian Parliament arrived at work wearing jeans in solidarity with the victim.

Peace Over Violence developed the Denim Day campaign in response to this case and the activism surrounding it. Since then, wearing jeans on Denim Day has become a symbol of protest against erroneous and destructive attitudes about sexual assault. More information about the history of Denim Day and activities may be found at . Visit the Department of Health Promotion to learn about 福利亚洲国产精品 violence prevention initiatives and resources for supporting survivors.

Buttons are available at the Faculty/Staff Wellness Center or the Office of Student Health & Wellness in the Ellington Center, the Office of Human Resources, or the SPARKS office in the Moseley Center.

Ross Szabo, 'Behind Happy Faces:  Talking about Mental Health' – Feb. 17 /u/news/2015/01/13/ross-szabo-behind-happy-faces-talking-about-mental-health-feb-17/ Tue, 13 Jan 2015 14:10:00 +0000 /u/news/2015/01/13/ross-szabo-behind-happy-faces-talking-about-mental-health-feb-17/

Ross Szabo, CEO of the Human Power Project and co-author of "Behind Happy Faces: Taking Charge of your Mental Health."

Ross Szabo, “Behind Happy Faces: Talking 福利亚洲国产精品 Mental Health”

Whitley Auditorium, 7 p.m.

Ross teaches students about the complexities of mental health issues and empowers them to seek help or help their friends seek help.  Most mental health challenges are highly treatable but too often remain hidden in silence, preventing people from achieving the recovery they are capable of.

Mental health challenges are the largest health problems facing colleges today. Twenty-five percent of college students experience a mental health disorder. Outside of diagnosable disorders students are dealing with lack of sleep, stress, and substance abuse. While 85 percent of colleges have reported drastic increases in the number of young people seeking mental health counseling, understanding and awareness about the issue are still lacking. During these difficult times, it is imperative for young people to express what they are going through, know that they are not alone, and feel comfortable while seeking help.

The program focuses specifically on how students can achieve positive mental health by learning about their coping mechanisms. Ross uses tasteful humor and insights to help participants understand common mental health conditions and individual differences.  He also covers warning signs that students can look for in their friends and peers, as well as resources that can provide guidance in these sensitive situations.
