The class, led by Dr. Tom Tiemann and Dr. Mark Kurt, visited manufacturing sites, financial firms, educational institutions, and historical and cultural sites in Krakow and Prague.

This study trip is part of the Elon MBA international experience. Such trips have taken MBA students to China, Southeast Asia, South America and the UK.

This award recognizes the critical contribution made by chief financial officers in providing financial stewardship guiding their firms through trying financial times. The luncheon was held July 14th, 2009, at Embassy Suites in Cary, NC. Spong is the Executive VP and CFO at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh.

This year’s event, hosted by the MBA Leadership Council and MBA faculty member Dr. Jo Ann Buck and her husband Paul, had nearly 90 folks in attendance. The annual pig pickin’ has become a highlight for MBA students and their families. Says Dr. Buck, “It’s about continuing personal relationships, camaraderie, a family event since children are welcome and come in crowds now, and the sharing of good food.”

Focused on small firms, the paper explores the effectiveness of transformational versus transactional leadership in responding to disruptive environmental change and the ability of the firm to balance exploitation of its existing domain against the need to explore new ventures and modes of operation.

The paper, “Exploration versus Exploitation: Leadership and the Paradox of Administration,” explores the role of leaders in stimulating an organizational shift away from a traditional reliance on familiar and efficient routines in favor of the greater risk inherent in exploring new opportunities. The paper identifies specific leader behaviors associated with such a strategy.

This paper, “Entrepreneurial Strategies in a Declining Industry,” uses a case-based qualitative methodology to explore how such firms can overcome resource constraints and inertia to fashion effective responses to low-wage, off-shore competition. The paper has been accepted for publication by the Journal of Small Business Strategy.

Burpitt has article accepted for journal publication. /u/news/2007/01/29/burpitt-has-article-accepted-for-journal-publication/ Mon, 29 Jan 2007 13:13:00 +0000 /u/news/2007/01/29/burpitt-has-article-accepted-for-journal-publication/ Bill Burpitt, Associate Professor of Business Administration, has had his article, “Surviving Industry Decline,” accepted for publication by the Journal of Business and Entrepreneurship. Targeting businesses that supply the furniture industry, the study explores how small firms confront industry decline and examines their primary strategic responses. It found that firms that employed diversification strategies were more likely to survive and even prosper than were those that focused on retrenchment and cost reductions. These firms also reported greater changes in manufacturing and management systems and in knowledge and skills employed in their operations.

All three describe various organizational responses to industry level decline, with emphasis on the performance implications of these strategies. Two of the papers were co-authored with Dr. Sally Fowler, American University. Burpitt was sole author of one of the three.

This paper is one of three that explores the alternatives facing firms in the U.S. furniture industry.
