KCSL: Little Alamance Creek Clean-Up /u/news/2015/10/07/kcsl-little-alamance-creek-clean-up-2/ Wed, 07 Oct 2015 18:50:00 +0000 /u/news/2015/10/07/kcsl-little-alamance-creek-clean-up-2/ The City of Burlington Stormwater Division is in need of volunteers to help clean up Little Alamance Creek on Oct. 31 from 8 a.m. – 12 p.m. Volunteers will meet at the Water Sewer Pipe Maintenance Building on 1103 S. Meban St. and then head over to the creek to begin clean-up. Light snacks, beverages, gloves, bags, and safety vests will be provided to volunteers.

Oktoberfest will be held at the school at 55 Hillcrest Avenue, Burlington. Volunteers will be helping set up, run, and tear down the fall festival. Volunteers would assist elementary students with homework assignments that include reading, writing and math. Homework Helpers takes place every Tuesday and Thursday at the Parish Hall at 1004 U.S. 70 in Haw River from 4-5 p.m. A brief orientation to the program and its policies will be held prior to the first session of volunteering.

Tutoring is needed during the school day, from 8:10-4:30 in any increment of time. Subjects most needed are all levels of English/literature, math, science, history, and Spanish. Tutoring will take place at the school, located at 1737 N. NC Highway 87. Volunteers will be needed to get signitures and to engage kids in fun activities while parents are discussing the goals of Alamance Citizens for a Drug Free Community. Volunteers will work 3 hour shifts on Saturday from 10-1, 12:45-3:45, and 3:30-6, and on Sunday from 1-3 and 3-6. Education development will be provided and smoke alarms will be installed or inspected. Volunteers are needed to provide safety information during each home inspection. Volunteers will meet at the Haw River Fire Department, 403 E Main St, Haw River, NC 27258. Lunch will be provided. Please email  Anne.Vestal@redcross.org by Tuesday, September 22 to volunteer.

The school is building a sensory garden to help those with developmental disabilities engage their senses of sight, smell, touch, taste and sound. The building will take place on Saturday, September 12, from 9 a.m. – 12 p.m. at LIFESPAN Circle School on 919 Stokes Street in Burlington.
