Engineering students to “fly” submersibles Dec. 2

The freshmen Elon Engineering students have built remote controlled underwater submersibles (officially called ROVs – Remotely Operated Vehicles) for their freshmen project. They will be “flying” them in Elon’s pool this Sunday from 2 to 4 p.m. They will control them from the surface by umbilical and monitoring their behavior via a camera on board. They will have a series of tasks to perform; retrieve a damaged ROV, instrument survey, patch a submerged pipe, relay race and tug-of-war. It is a lot of fun and kind of amazing to watch. Everyone is invited; old and young, high tech or not. Come and bring a smile.

Engineering adds Columbia as affiliate school

In addition to North Carolina State University, Virginia Tech and NC A&T, we now have agreements with Washington University (St. Louis) and Columbia University, giving students a total of five transfer options.

After three years at Elon, engineering students have completed most of the requirements for a liberal arts degree in a science or mathematics and also have completed two years toward an engineering degree. They then need an engineering school to transfer to in order to complete their engineering degree (the dual degree).

By adding Washington University, Elon is providing a midwest option, while Columbia University provides an option in the northeast. These additions have strengthened Elon’s dual-degree program, given Elon some valuable affiliations and provided the engineering students with more excellent choices for engineering schools.
