Valle publishes journal article on the experience of incivility in organizations /u/news/2025/01/21/valle-publishes-journal-article-on-the-experience-of-incivility-in-organizations/ Tue, 21 Jan 2025 13:37:55 +0000 /u/news/?p=1005183 Matt Valle, 福利亚洲国产精品 professor of management, along with colleagues Suzanne Zivnuska, Ken Harris, Ranida Harris, John Carlson and Dawn Carlson published research in the December 2024 issue of “Asia-Pacific Journal of Business Administration,” which investigated the spiraling effect of incivility perpetration following incivility victimization using organizational ICT (Information and Communication Technologies).

This is the first known test of the incidence of an incivility spiral due to communications enacted through ICT. According to the authors, there is special cause for concern given the often-impersonal nature of ICT use (and abuse) in organizations. Individuals may feel emboldened by the distance and perceived safety ICT mediation affords and may be less likely to moderate their online interactions with colleagues. Absent the physical intimacy and non-verbal signals that face-to-face interactions provide, individuals may be more likely to perpetuate incivility in ICT interactions even if there is no implicit intent to harm others.

The primary finding was that ICT incivility in the workplace has the potential to spiral, insofar as incivility victims are likely to become incivility perpetrators in the future. The research shows how technology-mediated communication can influence workplace relationships and behaviors, impacting overall workplace culture. By understanding the dynamics of incivility perpetuation through ICT, managers and organizational leaders can work toward promoting respectful and positive interactions in both virtual and physical work spaces.

ICT use is ubiquitous in organizations and maintaining high standards for civil discourse through the varied communication media may help organizations enhance collaboration, support employee emotional well-being, and deepen organizational commitment. Additionally, civil online interactions may help organizations avoid an escalation of other deviant behaviors in the future.

In online ICT interactions, the research team generally found that “what goes around, comes around.”

Management professor鈥檚 research featured in Baylor University鈥檚 Keller Center Research Report /u/news/2023/09/14/management-professors-research-featured-in-baylor-universitys-keller-center-research-report/ Thu, 14 Sep 2023 18:26:24 +0000 /u/news/?p=958474 The Keller Center for Research (Hankamer School of Business, Baylor University) highlights Professor of Management Matthew Valle’s research on technostress in their September 2023 (Vol. 16, Issue 3) Research Report.

The research report builds on the investigation published by Valle and colleagues in a 2022 issue of Information Technology & People,听one of the premier journals in the IS/IT field (Harris, Kenneth J., Ranida B. Harris, Matthew Valle, John R. Carlson, Dawn S. Carlson, Suzanne Zivnuska, and Brice枚n Wiley (2022), 鈥淭echnostress and the Entitled Employee: Impacts on Work and Family,鈥 Information Technology & People, 35, 1073-1095).

This particular research investigates the impact of technostress on employees in the real estate profession. Technology plays a crucial role in the day-to-day operations of real estate professionals, who are constantly using ICTs to manage work and communicate with clients. Agents are at a high risk of experiencing technostress, which can negatively impact work and family life. By understanding how technostress negatively influences employee turnover, work-family conflict, and family burnout, agents and firms can better manage potential stressors and create a more positive and productive work environment.

In this research, the team explored the impacts of two different types of technostress鈥攖echno-overload and techno-invasion鈥攐n the work domain, family domain, and the relationship between the two. Furthermore, the team hoped to shed light on the moderating effect of employee entitlement on these relationships.

The team found that employee entitlement significantly moderated the relationship between the technostress dimensions and employee turnover intentions, work-family conflict, and family burnout. Employees with high levels of entitlement are more likely to experience higher levels of turnover intentions, work-family conflict, and family burnout as a result of techno-overload and techno-invasion. The study also provides evidence that as entitlement鈥攁 growing trend among younger generations鈥攊s becoming more prevalent in the workforce, organizations must be aware of the potential impact on employees.

In real estate, the increasing reliance on technology can lead to techno-overload and techno-invasion, resulting in stress, burnout, and decreased work performance, job satisfaction, and overall well-being. It can also spill over into agents鈥 personal lives, leading to work-family conflict. Excessive use of technology
within real estate transactions can lead to information overload, confusion, and mistrust. Hence, it is important to strike a balance between utilizing technology and maintaining the human touch in agent-client interactions. This human touch can help build strong and long-lasting relationships, leading to increased customer satisfaction and loyalty.

The Keller Center Research Report is a journal of academic research with actionable insights for the real estate industry. Agents, brokers, lawyers and other professionals use the journal’s relevant and unbiased content to inform and enhance their business practices.

Matthew Valle presents paper at conference /u/news/2023/03/15/matthew-valle-presents-paper-at-conference/ Wed, 15 Mar 2023 20:37:02 +0000 /u/news/?p=942676
Matthew Valle, professor of management

Matthew Valle, professor of management, presented the results of his recent research at a conference in San Antonio, Texas on Saturday, March 11.

The paper, “Too much of a bad thing? The curvilinear relationship between technostress and interpersonal deviance,” was presented at the 2023 Conference of the Academic and Business Research Institute. The research was conducted in 2022 with Ken Harris (Indiana University), Suzanne Zivnuska (California State University – Chico), Ranida Harris (Indiana University) and John and Dawn Carlson (Baylor University).

The study looked at the nature of the relationship between technostress (defined as the mental stress associated with using information and communication technology (ICT) on the job) and negative outcomes (e.g., dissatisfaction, burnout, intent to turnover). As with other job stressors, the more employees experience stress in the workplace, the more likely they are to suffer negative effects. More specifically, this investigation analyzed the relationship between technostress and interpersonal deviance (deviance directed at another member of the organization).

The study team hypothesized that the relationship between technostress and interpersonal deviance was not linear, as is assumed by previous studies. If the assumption of linearity does not hold, the nature of current managerial interventions can be called into question.

The results demonstrated that the best fitting model of the relationship was indeed curvilinear, suggesting that technostress in small/modest amounts does not result in appreciable amounts of interpersonal deviance. In fact, low levels of technostress might even be useful for engaging and assisting employees (what some call “techno-eustress”). However, at high levels of technostress, instances of interpersonal deviance escalate exponentially, suggesting that employees reach a “break point” and are no longer able to cope effectively with technostress. Subsequently, they lash out at their fellow co-workers in inappropriate ways.

The primary implication of this analysis suggests that managers shouldn鈥檛 be too quick to lessen or remove all technostress from the workplace. Some technostress may be helpful if it causes individuals to respond by learning new technologies, improving workflows, and enhancing organizational performance. A little stress can be a good thing. At higher levels of technostress, however, managers should be attuned to indications that individuals have exceeded their abilities to cope. Behavioral changes are most easily witnessed, and managers can address interpersonal deviance when it first appears.

Matt Valle earns Professional Scrum Master I certification /u/news/2022/01/20/matt-valle-earns-professional-scrum-master-i-certification/ Thu, 20 Jan 2022 14:30:33 +0000 /u/news/?p=896097 Elon Professor of management Matthew Valle has completed assessment and certification as a Professional Scrum Master. The 60-minute assessment consists of 80 multiple choice questions based on the material described in the and topics from multiple focus areas defined as .

Those who pass the assessment receive the industry-recognized PSM I Certification to demonstrate their mastery of Scrum fundamentals.

Scrum is a lightweight, agile, project management framework that helps people, teams and organizations generate value through adaptive solutions for complex problems. Scrum is founded on empiricism and lean thinking. Empiricism asserts that knowledge comes from experience and making decisions based on what is observed. Lean thinking reduces waste and focuses on the essentials. Scrum employs an iterative, incremental approach to optimize predictability and control risk. Scrum engages groups of people who collectively have all the skills and expertise to do the work and share or acquire such skills as needed. Scrum is one of many agile methods/frameworks used primarily in software development, but there are applications in other industries.

Valle teaches project management courses in the undergraduate B.S.B.A. in Project Management and the MBA/MSBA programs. He is certified as a Project Management Professional (PMP) by the Project Management Institute; he also holds the CAPM certification. Valle has led multiple high-value industry and DOD acquisition and development projects.

Valle publishes 3 peer-reviewed journal articles /u/news/2020/09/24/valle-publishes-3-peer-reviewed-journal-articles/ Thu, 24 Sep 2020 14:13:02 +0000 /u/news/?p=825214 The first article “Examining mindfulness and its relationship to unethical behaviors”(with Maggie Wan of Texas State University and Suzanne Zivnuska of California State University, Chico; June 2020 Management Research Review聽 ) explored the mediating effect of moral disengagement in the relationship between mindfulness and unethical behaviors. We also studied the moderating effect of organizational politics perceptions on the mediational chain. Results showed that mindfulness reduced destructive deviant behavior and unethical pro-organizational behavior through moral disengagement; additionally, the mediation effects were weaker when employees鈥 perceptions of politics were stronger. The results indicate that mindfulness and perceptions of organizational politics combine to have profound impacts on employee unethical behaviors. Organizations seeking to minimize the occurrence of deviance and unethical behaviors may do well to support employee mindfulness as well as minimizing organizational politics.

The second article “Situational antecedents to organizational identification and the role of supervisor support” (with Martha Andrews of the University of North Carolina Wilmington and Micki Kacmar of Texas State University; August 2020 Organization Management Journal聽) examined the effects of procedural justice, training opportunities and innovation on job satisfaction and affiliation commitment via the mediating effect of organizational identification. The authors also explored the moderating role of satisfaction with supervisor on the relationship between the antecedents and organizational identification as well as its moderating effect on the mediational chain.聽Results demonstrated that the indirect effects for procedural justice and training opportunities as predictors were significant, while none of the paths for innovation as a predictor were significant. Satisfaction with supervisor moderated the relationships between procedural justice and organizational identification and innovation and organizational identification.

The third research article “Technology-enacted abusive supervision and its effect on work and family” (with Dawn Carlson of Baylor University, John Carlson of Baylor University, Suzanne Zivnuska of California State University, Chico, Ken Harris of Indiana University Southeast and Ranida Harris of Indiana University Southeast; Journal of Social Psychology ) examined the effects of technology-enacted abusive supervision, defined as subordinate perceptions of supervisor鈥檚 use of information and communication technologies (ICTs) to engage in hostile communications. This research was designed to examine if technology-enacted abusive supervision has an impact on both the work and family domains. Based on conservation of resources theory, we theorized that technology-enacted abusive supervision enhances subordinate engagement in emotional labor surface acting, which contributes to emotional exhaustion, which in turn impacts both the work and family domains. Results demonstrate significant paths in both domains. Subordinate perceptions of technology-enacted abusive supervision are positively related to the engagement in technology-enacted incivility through the serial mediation of emotional labor surface acting and emotional exhaustion. Additionally, subordinate perceptions of technology-enacted abusive supervision are positively related to family undermining at home for the subordinate through the serial mediation of emotional labor surface acting, emotional exhaustion, and stress transmission.
