Better Together hosts its second interfaith panel series, “Real Talk” – Oct. 24 /u/news/2012/10/01/better-together-hosts-its-second-interfaith-panel-series-real-talk-oct-24/ Mon, 01 Oct 2012 18:20:00 +0000 /u/news/2012/10/01/better-together-hosts-its-second-interfaith-panel-series-real-talk-oct-24/ The second program is called “Real Talk with the Imam.”

Featured at this panel will be Imam Abdullah Antepli from Duke University. Imam Antepli currently serves as the Muslim chaplain at Duke University, one of only a few of full-time Muslim chaplains in colleges and universities across the United States. His work at Duke focuses on religious leadership for Duke’s Muslim community, pastoral care and counseling for persons of any faith or of no ascribed faith, and intra- and interfaith work. He provides a Muslim voice and perspective to the discussions of faith, spirituality, social justice, and more on Duke’s campus through seminars, panels, and other avenues. Additionally, Imam Antepli serves as a faculty member in the Divinity School and at DISC (Duke Islamic Studies Center), teaching a variety of courses on Islam.

During the discussion, Imam Antepli will first give a brief introduction to Islam followed by an open dialogue with the audience. He will answer all types of questions such as “What is the significance of the head wrap?” “What is jihad, and why do people say it means holy war?” “Why do women have enough power to disgrace a family, but no power in other respects?” The goal of this event is to educate others about Islam in an environment that encourages difficult questions to be asked, which will help to break down stereotypes and other common misconceptions.

The panel is open to students, faculty, and the general public. Sponsoring this event is Better Together, Elon’s interfaith organization. If you have any questions, please email Mason Sklut at msklut@elon.edu.

Pizza in the Hut! – Oct. 19 /u/news/2011/10/18/pizza-in-the-hut-oct-19/ Tue, 18 Oct 2011 12:06:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/10/18/pizza-in-the-hut-oct-19/ Please join Hillel for the annual Pizza in the Hut on Wednesday, October 19, at 6 p.m., where students can eat pizza in the Sukkah outside of Moseley in honor of the Jewish holiday, Sukkot.

The Hebrew word Sukkot means a “booth or tabernacle,” which is a walled structure covered with tree branches. The sukkot symbolizes the type of fragile dwellings in which the Israelites dwelt during their 40 years of travel in the desert after the Exodus from slavery in Egypt.

Everyone is welcome!

Thanks,
Elon Hillel

Sophomores seek others interested in forming Jewish fraternity /u/news/2011/09/07/sophomores-seek-others-interested-in-forming-jewish-fraternity/ Wed, 07 Sep 2011 13:28:00 +0000 /u/news/2011/09/07/sophomores-seek-others-interested-in-forming-jewish-fraternity/ Are you interested in starting a Jewish fraternity at Elon? Sophomores Garret Mann and Mason Sklut have been working together on gauging interest in starting a Jewish fraternity here at Elon.

Jewish fraternities are non-discriminatory social fraternities that were established from core values in Judaism to help students develop into responsible citizens with high moral character through living together in a brotherhood whose purpose is not specifically religious, but social and cultural in nature.

Jewish fraternities are non-exclusive and open to all who are willing to espouse its purpose and values. If you are a Jewish or non-Jewish male student, and have an interest in a Jewish fraternity, please contact either Garret Mann (gmann@elon.edu) or Mason Sklut (msklut@elon.edu).
