Explore ways Elon is working to develop a more inclusive environment that celebrates diversity, learn about and discuss reported incidents of bias within our community and have an opportunity to offer your insights about ways to make it better.

New coordinator of substance education joins staff /u/news/2006/11/02/new-coordinator-of-substance-education-joins-staff/ Thu, 02 Nov 2006 20:38:00 +0000 /u/news/2006/11/02/new-coordinator-of-substance-education-joins-staff/ Please welcome the newest member of the Division of Student Life, our new coordinator for substance education, Lauren Martin.

Lauren comes to Elon from UNC-Chapel Hill, where she received her master’s degree. She received her bachelor’s degree in psychology from N.C. State University. Lauren has a Certificate in Substance Abuse and gained valuable experience working at the Center for Healthy Student Behaviors at UNC, where she taught alcohol education classes, DWI classes, and also performed individual assessments with students.

Lauren’s other work experience includes working at a suicide crisis line where she feels she gained experience working with people in all types of crises. She loves working with college students and encouraging them to make healthy choices.

In her new position as coordinator for substance education for Elon, Lauren hopes to encourage students to make low-risk choices by researching and implementing a social norms campaign. She is also excited about the opportunity to work with our great group of peer educators who are already doing great work to promote low-risk behaviors on our campus. Overall, Lauren is passionate about promoting healthy behaviors, women’s issues, and social justice.

In her free time, Lauren enjoys running, reading, baking and spending time with her partner and her new puppy, Dexter.

The position of coordinator for substance education is a part-time position. But, to be available for all members of the community, Lauren will have 15 standard hours when students, faculty and staff can reach her in her office. Those hours are currently Monday, Wednesday and Thursday from 11 to 4. Lauren will have an additional 5 hours available daytimes, evenings and weekends for programming. Please contact her to learn more about programming options.

The following is a list of activities for April:

Last week in March/First week in April

Kick off to Sexual Assault Awareness Month with a presentation called “Let’s Talk 福利亚洲国产精品 IT” (This presentation focuses on preventing sexual violence through awareness.)

Self defense workshop for women presented by SafeSkills Inc.

Second Week in April

The Women and Gender Studies Committee presents a panel discussion about sexual violence April 11th at 7:00 in the Isabella Cannon Room

Faculty and Staff – be looking for your personal brochure about sexual violence with information and resources

Third Week in April

Clothesline Project will be displayed

Run for Respect race on the 22nd – proceeds going to support CrossRoads Sexual Assault Resource and Response Center

Throughout the Month

The office of the Coordinator for Personal Health Programs and Community Well Being will be distributing awareness material all month (both to student organizations and throughout campus in coordination with other campus departments)

Leigh-Anne Royster is available all month to present information to student groups about sexual violence.
