Competing were, clockwise from top left, Ashton Croft, Zoe Palomaki, Shawn Thompson and Torii Masinsin

Ashton Croft and Zoe Palomaki took the top spot during the competition that was part of the Southern Association of College Student Affairs (SACSA) Conference held Nov. 2-4 in Raleigh, N.C. This is the first time Elon Master of Arts in Higher Education (MHE) students have attended the conference. SACSA is a student affairs professional association that draws membership from 12 states in the southeast region.

Four first-year MHE students participated in the case competition, examining professional conundrums and ethical dilemmas in higher education work. Upon receiving the case, participants were given 45 minutes to collaboratively develop a resolution to the complex scenario. Teams then presented their action plan to a panel of higher education professionals. The first-place showing by Croft and Palomaki was a significant accomplishment for first-semester graduate students.

The four Elon students who participated and their apprenticeships at Elon are:

  • Ashton Croft 鈥 Moseley Campus Center
  • Zoe Palomaki 鈥 Student-Athlete Services
  • Torii Masinsin 鈥擴ndergraduate Admissions
  • Shawn Thompson 鈥擪ernodle Center for Service Learning & Community Engagement

Rozana Carducci, associate professor of education and graduate ddirector of the MHE program, is thrilled with the students鈥 participation and success in their inaugural SACSA conference.

鈥淧rofessional engagement is a strong value of the MHE program, and I am so impressed with the initiative, enthusiasm for learning, and professionalism demonstrated by Ashton, Zoe, Torii and Shawn,” Carducci said. “Zoe and Ashton winning first place in the case study competition as first-semester graduate students is an amazing achievement that underscores their potential to advance the higher education profession.鈥

Some of our students knew her personally. The loss of a college student is always tragic, but for this to occur so close to home is particularly disconcerting. This note is to remind students that counselors in Elon’s Counseling Services are available to speak with students who may be grieving or just feel uneasy about this situation. They are located in the Ellington Center on campus (278-7280).

For your general information, the University always has a Counselor on Call; s/he may be reached after hours by calling Campus Security at 278-5555; just ask to speak with the Counselor on Call. Also, do not hesitate to contact the Chaplain’s Office at 278-7729 or the Office of Student Development at 278-7200 as resources for any personal concerns.

Elon to assist Gulfport, Mississippi hurricane relief efforts /u/news/2005/09/16/elon-to-assist-gulfport-mississippi-hurricane-relief-efforts/ Fri, 16 Sep 2005 13:08:00 +0000 /u/news/2005/09/16/elon-to-assist-gulfport-mississippi-hurricane-relief-efforts/ The Burlington Times-News is coordinating Operation Gulfport because Gulfport is a city similar in population to our community, and has not been receiving as much attention and media coverage as New Orleans in the aftermath of the storm.

Elon’s Kernodle Center for Service Learning is working to identify an organization or area of Gulfport where Elon can concentrate its efforts. Service trips to that city will be organized during fall break (Oct. 14-18), Winter Term and spring break. Students, faculty and staff who wish to participate in those service trips should contact the Kernodle Center for more details.

In addition, Elon’s continued fundraising efforts will provide money to buy materials and provide direct victim assistance for the service trips to Gulfport.

Fund drive collections will take place at the Sept. 17, Sept. 24 and Oct. 1 Phoenix football games at Rhodes Stadium. Donations can also be made online through the Katrina Relief page on the Elon Web site: http://www.elon.edu/katrina

More details on Elon’s relief efforts in Gulfport will be forthcoming and will be posted on the Katrina Relief Web page and on E-net.
