Her paper, “Framing self-directed humor by Japanese women,” was part of a panel that cross-linguistically (American English, New Zealand English, Argentine Spanish, Japanese) examines the linguistic practice of humorous self-disclosure with special attention of age and gender.

Takanashi’s paper, “Hypothetical represented discourse as joking stance index in Japanese conversation,” is in the session entitled “The dynamics of stance in joking interaction” under the Society for Linguistic Anthropology section. Her paper demonstrates how the speaker’s joking stance is publicly displayed, negotiated, and jointly constructed among the speech participants.
