Commencement ceremonies were held on Aug. 22, 2009 for 45 M.Ed. students who completed their studies in the School of Education. Commencement speaker was David H. Cooper, Dean of the School of Education.

Encouraged to make the most of all ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· has to offer, and challenged to spend the next four years preparing for their lifelong roles as global citizens, members of the Class of 2013 gathered for the first time on Aug. 29, 2009, Under the Oaks of campus for New Student Convocation.

What does it take, and what responsibilities do students have, to act as "global citizens?" Professors Tom Arcaro and Rosemary Haskell tackle those questions in a new co-edited textbook and anthology, Understanding the Global Experience: Becoming a Responsible World Citizen, with chapters on topics ranging from the environment to religion to the international media.

Step Afrika, a critically acclaimed professional company best known for promoting an understanding and appreciation of stepping and the tradition's use as an educational tool for young people worldwide, comes to ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· on Wednesday night for a 7 p.m. show in McCrary Theatre.

They carried clothes and laptops, ironing boards and plastic palm trees with miniature lights for décor. Mother Nature even kept the rain at bay. Hundreds of ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· freshmen arrived on campus Friday for the start of their collegiate studies, with staff and faculty welcoming families who traveled to North Carolina from all corners of the country for Move-In Day 2009.

Campus Technologies held its 2nd annual Connected @ Elon event in Alumni Gym on Aug. 30 during New Student Orientation. Created to help incoming students learn about the technology available on campus, the theme of the show was Family Feud.

Professor emeritus David Noer’s updated version of his 1995 book Healing the Wounds: Overcoming the Trauma of Layoffs and Revitalizing Downsized Corporations was published this month, providing readers insight for managing layoffs and how corporations can create healthier worker relationships.

Andi Cochran wanted to spend her final months before college investing in a worthwhile project, so when the incoming ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· freshman used her high school graduation money to buy toys for patients at Duke Children’s Hospital, she knew her actions represented more than a gift – they were a “thank you” to an institution that touched her own life.

The ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· community gathered Thursday morning for the first time on the brick plaza in front of the Academic Village, where faculty and staff held a special College Coffee before the official start of the academic year.

Work by ¸£ÀûÑÇÖÞ¹ú²ú¾«Æ· students and professors took center stage Tuesday morning in the opening hours of SURF 2009. More than 30 faculty members presented research in the second annual "Celebration of Faculty Scholarship," which segued into a special College Coffee in the Koury Business Center for dozens of students to share their research findings in a poster session that packed the building's concourse.
